FLIES, A POEM ABOUT HASTY CHOICES

* * *

Flies,
A Poem About Hasty Choices

Flowers on the table
In a square of sunlight
They color and scent the room
But hide
The stains on the tablecloth
With its single white plate.
She sets dinner for one
By the window
To watch the street below-
Past fat flies on the window ledge
Who circle against the glass
Seeking life outside
In the light
With its forbidden horizons.
She is safe from that place
Where we wreck our cars
Trying to take a turn too fast.
And overrun the finish line
Before the race begins
Leaving us spectators
Listening
To the flies buzz.
