INTO THE NIGHT, A POEM ABOUT THE WAY.

* * * * *

INTO THE NIGHT
A POEM ABOUT THE WAY

Thousands upon thousands
Upon thousands rush
On the night road.
Cars in the dark
With tail lights
Like a river of red
That flies inches above the ground,
All keeping to neat lines
And tidy rows;
Isolated from one another
Separated by sheet metal,
Plastic, and glass;
So many people,
So many strangers
Alone and silent,
No one speaks
But all listen
To voices on the airwaves
Who stall their thoughts.
With eyes focused
On running lights ahead,
Night-blinded and unwilling to see
Any star-
They race
Toward hope's thin grey haze
On that pale horizon
While the guiding star
Flickers vainly
Above.
