THE CAT FIGHT AT MIDNIGHT, A POEM ABOUT DIRECTION..

The Cat Fight In The Dead Of The Night
A Poem About Direction

The companionship
Of stars peer down
From their ink black beds
As mortals sleep
And dream with hollow eyes.
The cold white moon slips
Skyward from behind black hills
And shines her light on the two
Who rush to meet
On night's vacant street.
They hiss and slash
With razor-edged claws
Yowling for dominance,
Then become a tangled
Lacerating ball as they roll
From one side of the street
To back over the other,
While
I turn from one side
Of the bed cheering the first
To back over the other
Cheering the second
While listening for the
Outcome; when the
Vanquished flees through the dark
Turning over trash cans
And the victor tears after.
Then dawn's scorching
Will open my eyes to see
Which way I will turn.
